CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS THE MAIN AIM FOR TOYOTA GAZOO RACING SA’S BOTTERILL/VACY-LYLE AS NRC MOVES TO P.E.

Toyota Gazoo Racing SA’s Guy Botterill and co-driver Simon Vacy-Lyle will be aiming for maximum championship points during this weekend’s Algoa National Rally, Round 4 of the 2018 SA National Rally Championship. The pair currently find themselves in second place in the championship, just one point adrift of the VW Polo crew of AC Potgieter and Nico Swartz at the top – so bagging as many points as possible will be the Toyota Etios crew’s top priority.

“Our season has certainly gained some momentum,” said Botterill after completing the final test session before the upcoming rally. “We won the last two rallies, which has really put us back in championship contention, after a disappointing DNF on the opening round.”

The crew’s Class R2N Toyota Etios has been prepared with great care for the Algoa National Rally, as the event has a reputation as an extremely tough event with a high attrition rate. As in the past, this weekend’s rally will include stages around Port Elizabeth itself, as well as the traditional Longmore Forest stages.

“Over the years, the Longmore stages have been the undoing of many hard-charging crews. With this in mind we’ll try to be as safe as possible – but as fast as necessary,” said Botterill.

The Algoa National Rally gets under way with a ceremonial start at the Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth at 13:40 on Friday, July 6th. The action then moves to the Jachtvlakte, inland from the friendly city, before returning to the mall for two crowd-friendly sprint stages.

The Longmore Forest comes into play on Saturday, July 7th, as the crews take on legendary stages such as Sinkdam and Culturama, before returning to the Baywest Mall for one more mad dash to the finish. Spectating is free of charge, and fans are encouraged to visit the SA Rallying Facebook page for detailed spectating information.
